On 29th December, 1914, the 1st East Surrey battalion of 14 Brigade, 5th Division moved into the front line north-east of Wulverghem in Belgium. On 1st January, 1915, the British guns heavily shelled the German trenches opposite to which the enemy replied in kind and a large shell fell in the support trench held by A Company, burying five men. The attempts to dig these men out were hampered by further German shelling which killed some of the rescue party. In total six men were killed one of whom was Charles Tibbles. |
